A pub in Wales has reversed its ban on over 60s
The ban was imposed to try to protect older customers from Covid-19.
The owners of Tafarn Dwynant in Ceinws, near Machynlleth in North Wales have decided to reverse a ban on over 60s imposed just days ago. Because of the increased risk that older people face from covid-19, the pub imposed the ban to protect the health of older customers and avoid it becoming a point of infection.
Age discrimination in goods and services
Since 1 October 2012, it has been unlawful to discriminate on grounds of age in the provision of goods and services.
There are a number of exceptions to the legislation that apply to the provision of financial services, the offering of age-based concessions (eg “10% discount for over 60s”), holidays (eg 18-30), and sport. If none of these exceptions apply, a business might be able to defend age discriminatory practices if they can show that they can be objectively justified as a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim.
