Older Americans say they suffer age discrimination in the workplace

A fifth of Americans aged 50 or over believe that they have been overlooked for promotion or raises because of their age.

The research by Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research explored the public’s perception of what ageing means in American workplaces.

Extending working life beyond retirement age is beneficial to the economy, according to 45% of Americans, whilst 39% report that it is good for works in general. Around one in two people believe that having more older people at work improves workplace culture.

These opinions aren’t shared by all. People aged 50 or over tend to be more enthusiastic about the increase in older workers compared to younger people.

The research was conducted from 1,423 telephone interviews conducted over 14-18 February 2019. The margin of error is +/- 3.7%.
