Age discrimination in the insurance industry? 66-year-old marathon runner shocked at high premiums when she needed insurance for first holiday in six years
A 66-year-old regular marathon runner was shocked at the high premiums she was confronted with when she needed insurance for her first holiday in six years.
Travelling is no longer the preserve of the young, yet many insurers refuse cover to older customers because of fears over the rising cost of medical claims.
66 year old Amanda Wilkins, a retired journalist and regular marathon runner from Newhaven, East Sussex, was shocked at the high premiums she was confronted with when she needed insurance for her first holiday in six years. Some insurers wanted £60 for the five-day trip to Copenhagen.
On the recommendation of a friend, Amanda spoke to Age UK Travel Insurance, which offers single-trip and annual multi-trip cover with no age restrictions. It gave her a single trip policy for just £16.40.
'The search for travel cover was very frustrating,' she says. 'I'm in good health and have run six marathons, the last just two years ago, so I'm fit and well. I felt I was being discriminated against because of my age. Some of the premiums quoted were extortionate. Thankfully, the cover offered by Age UK was much more reasonable.'
