A case brought by a senior Catholic police officer against the PSNI alleging religious and age discrimination has been settled.

Superintendent Gerry Murray, 55, decided to take the case after he failed to get a job in the Professional Standards department two years ago.

The case had been listed for hearing on Monday but did not proceed.

The PSNI has accepted that in some respects procedures and policies were less than satisfactory.

A statement from the PSNI said no admission of liability had been made by it, nor was any compensation paid.

"Superintendent Murray, who lodged his tribunal claim in December 2009, also lodged an internal grievance on the same issues," the statement said.

It added that the grievance had been upheld "solely in respect to procedural points" and the "grievance outcome found no evidence of discrimination whatsoever".

Superintendent Murray played Gaelic football for Ardoyne before joining the police 36 years ago, and played a key role in setting up the PSNI GAA team.

He has been offered a career development interview by the PSNI and it had agreed any decision taken would not affect his future career.
