The European Commission on Thursday sent a letter of formal notice to Greece calling it to comply with European Court ruling concerning equality of retirement age between men-women.

The letter is the first stage of prejudicial procedure in respect of breach of former European Court ruling concerning civil servants retirement age.

The European Commission says that Greece has not taken specific measures to comply with March, 26, 2009 ruling and adds that present regulations including different retirement age between men-women civil servants violates law on gender equality.

Greece has a two-month deadline to respond to European Commission notice.

Commenting on the ruling, Vladimir Spidla, EU Commissioner for Equal Opportunities, said: "equal pay for men and women is a key EU principal", adding "ten months ago the European Court issued ruling saying that Greece's regulations discriminate genders. Greece should comply with European Court ruling soon"
